The Need

Hope Victory Gardens

The world is facing a major food crisis because of the Ukraine war, the Covid-19 pandemic, global energy costs, and fertilizer shortages. Throughout history, large-scale wars and pandemics often lead to regional famines. We are already facing food and fertilizer shortages in multiple countries around the globe. The war in Ukraine has severely reduced the ability of Europe, Russia, and Ukraine to supply the world with food and natural gas, which is critical in the production of commercial fertilizers.

War +Pandemic =famine

The shortage of natural gas and the need to divert it to the Europeans this winter to stay warm has shut down production of Europe’s largest commercial Fertilizer plants. The supplies of those fertilizers are plummeting worldwide, and the largest plant in Germany that makes commercial fertilizer has stopped production altogether. Several others have cut or stopped production. Adding to this, the supply chain issues caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the world is heading for potential food shortages that can quickly cascade into regional famines.

"Millions in Famine"

The World Food Program*** and the World Bank have been alerting African, Asian, and South American nations that they will experience famines resulting in hundreds of millions of people being thrust into food-related crises with millions dying. Governments around the globe are alerting their people that shortages are coming. It could become a significant crisis in the next several years. There are steps we can take now that could help build our local supply chain and lessen the impact of food insecurity and potential famines.

Join a Movement!

I invite you to join us in a movement that will address these issues. Together, we can be the solution. Now is the time to address these problems with easily accessible answers before the crisis becomes large and overwhelming.

Historically when similar crises confronted different regions, there are a few cases where people have worked together to stop disaster from coming. The Jewish leader Joseph was used to encourage Pharaoh to grow food before the years of famine, and they were able to stop the impact of the famine from being a regional disaster.

It worked during WW2

During both world wars, Europe and America faced massive food shortages. During that time, the governments promoted “Victory Gardens,” where people were encouraged to grow their produce to combat the shortfalls that were coming. They worked together on community gardens and made it through the hard times. At the height of the Victory Gardens, it is estimated that half of Americans had victory Gardens, and 40% of America’s produce came from those Victory Gardens! It is estimated that over 20 million victory gardens are on over 20 million acres! Through this concerted effort, the food shortages caused by war were averted.

Victory Gardens

Victory Gardens were able to bring food security in America and Europe’s biggest time of crisis. Today we need a global solution before things become even more critical especially in poorer countries that are most vulnerable . With rising fuel and fertilizer costs, farmers are forced to grow less and with less fertilizer. They have lower yields. Individual households experience challenges with higher food costs as global inflation and shortages have caused their grocery bills to be higher and higher. Now is a perfect time to promote growing food in more creative ways and bring the production of food locally. It is time for us to begin multiplying the efforts to encourage growing more food close to peoples homes.

Be the Solution!

Your invited!

I invite you to join the Hope Victory Garden movement. Where together, we can help each other develop real solutions that can address this looming global crisis. I am the director of an organization called Seeds of Hope International Partnerships. We have worked in Africa for over 20 years. Most of our work was water, hygiene, and sanitation-related projects. We have brought clean water to over one million people. Throughout the years, we have also done agriculture projects. But we are now focusing again on agriculture because we believe God has an answer to this problem. We all can be part of the solution by raising Hope Victory Garden champions who can promote one or more steps of the Hope Victory Garden Movement.
